YOUR FIRST ACUPUNCTURE VISIT · WATERLOO
Never had acupuncture before? You’re in good hands.
Before your first visit, I’ll usually reach out by email to learn a little about what’s been bothering you and what you’d like help with.
When you arrive, we’ll get you comfortable on the treatment table and I’ll ask a few questions as we get started. I’ll explain what I’m doing along the way, so you can simply settle in and relax.
WHAT ACUPUNCTURE FEELS LIKE
Gentler than you might expect.
Acupuncture needles are very thin, and most people are surprised by how little they feel when they’re placed.
You may feel a tiny pinch, a dull ache, heaviness or a tingling sensation around a point — or sometimes nothing at all.
Once the needles are in, you’ll simply rest comfortably. If anything doesn’t feel right, tell me and I’ll adjust it. I want you to be able to relax during your treatment.
BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT
A few things to know before you come.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that gives me easy access to your arms and legs. Ideally, wear pants that can roll up to your knees and a shirt with sleeves that can roll up above your elbows.
Should I eat beforehand?
Yes. It’s a good idea to have something to eat before your appointment rather than arriving on an empty stomach.
Will I be left alone during treatment?
I’ll usually step out of the room while you rest with the points in. You’ll have a small handheld buzzer beside you, so if you need me for any reason, just press the button and I’ll come in.
APPOINTMENTS & TREATMENT PLANS
How often will I need acupuncture?
Most people start with 4–6 appointments, often once or twice a week at first. If symptoms are particularly bothersome, I may recommend two treatments a week for the first week or two to help build some momentum.
As things improve, we’ll usually begin spacing your appointments farther apart. Some people finish treatment once the issue has resolved, while others choose occasional maintenance visits to help keep things feeling good.
There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment plan. I’ll pay attention to how you’re responding and let you know what I think makes sense as we go.
